Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symbols?+
I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. Subtractive notation: IV=4, IX=9, XL=40, XC=90, CD=400, CM=900.
Why only up to 3,999?+
Standard Roman numeral rules allow at most three consecutive identical symbols (MMM=3000). There is no symbol larger than M. Numbers above 3,999 require a bar over the symbol (vinculum) to indicate multiplication by 1000.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?+
No. The system has no symbol for zero, which is a key reason the Hindu-Arabic system replaced it for arithmetic.
